  • My pretty new Turbo

So I got a present from the turbo gods,

It's not an EFR but it's baller none the less

The turbo started life probably as a GT2860RS it has a HTA billet compressor wheel 68mm so just smaller than the GT2871R

The data says the turbo will flow 48lb/min vs 45 for the 2871R

Somehow it was rationalized that I needed a Tial cover for the exhaust side set up with V-bands,

I don't like speculation much it gives me heartburn, I have a 2871r on my other car that has about 5XXX miles on it, the plan is to modify the manifold and downpipe for V-Band usage, then swap the chra's to get a good apples to apples difference on the "2869HTA" vs the 2871R

These turbo's are fairly popular with the 1.8t guys for quick spool, and the 997TT guys love them aswell,

That looks pretty nice. Wonder what power level that is going to put you at...
Sounds like spool time is going to be around the low 3000's if not before.

Please smooth out that god awful Garrett compressor inlet. Bellmouth (smooth cross sectional area contraction) and 400 grit max final surface prep (forget whatthat translates into on Ra, high 30s?).

should respond much sooner than a 2871R esp with the flange improvements and ext w/g.

alot of the audi and snowmobile guys report a quicker spool than the 2860RS, im skeptical there though, and don't have one to compare with come dyno time either, but would gladly add it to testing if available.

48lb/min ~ 480 Crank HP so it should happily get me 4-420 at the wheels,

The motor it is going to provide for is an SR with 9:1 CP pistons/eagle rods, Tomei 260 cams, AEM EMS, blah blah blah. I'll be looking for a nice and easy 300whp until I sort the car out, then we'll turn the wick up to the 400 mark

yeah Def I'll probably spin it up in the lathe and give it a nice concentric cleanup all the way around with a bellmouthed entry as you said

I'm much more interested to see this than the EFR nonsense

I can't believe they leave such a sharp step there, as that's the highest velocity the flow will be anywhere in the intake tract except around the valves. Makes it easy to reduce flow losses.

It's also worth it to smooth out the exit of the compressor housing too. Only takes a few minutes with a sanding roll, don't even need to get fancy with a die grinder.

Glad i didn't have to do that with my super hyped up turbo. Ups lost my pfc that was going to be rma-ed(injector driver dead). So i'm also going to be running aem now.

It's a standard garrett cover that they machine to fit the impeller , I'll machine it because I can not because it matters much, The EFR's have a straight neck all the way into the turbo, I was wondering what the thought process was on that, ???small footprint???

Anyway I have all the peices and hope to push through and get this car wrapped up soon, really excited to get to the dyno and shake this turbo down and see what it's good for.

Anybody have a 2860 to throw in the mix?

Don't efrs have anti-surge porting on the shrouds? Typically requires a straight shot.

The air will naturally form a bellmouth as its drawn in, but you get vortices and flow separation on a sharp edge like the efrs. You can easily see the vortices from minor disturbances on even non humid days when you go above mach .5 or so.

I have an extra 2860. You don't mind the play in the shaft and the no boost thing do you?

I've always wondered how this setup would perform. Looking forward to results.

No not at all, it won't skew the data much at all
