Simple oil filter and oil plumbing question.

I'm doing a remote oil filter and oil cooler setup on my SR20.

I always assumed from looking at the OEM oil block that the oil flowed like so:

Oil goes into the oil filter from the big center hole used to screw the filter on to the oil block. The oil comes out of the small holes located around the large center hole in the middle of the oil filter.

Looking at my remote oil filter bracket, the port labeled "in" would bring the oil in from the side and use the small holes to draw fluid into the filter. The port labeled "out" lines up with the large center hole which would let the oil flow to the oil cooler.

How should I plumb my lines?

Here is how I was planning on running whole system:

Out from the engine
In (side port labeled "IN") to the remote oil filter bracket
Out (center port labeled "out") to the oil cooler.
From the oil cooler, back to the engine.

Do it?

I hope I was clear in my questioning. It's hard to describe everything using generic terms.

I believe filters always work from outside-in.

I would have the oil filter last in the order.. just to make sure everything gets filtered

My train of thought was to filter the oil before it goes in the cooler. In a pointless effort to catch something that may harm the cooler in any way.

Technically wouldn't everything get filtered anyways?

I don't think the order matters, but the filter definitely goes from the outside holes to the inside hole. The anti-drainback valve is just a rubber gasket that covers those outside holes when there is no oil pressure, which is an easy way to remember it.

Andy, my oil cooler setup is no where near as pretty as yours.

Thanks for the help gents. I just a few odds and and ends and the oil system should be ready to go soon. Still waiting on some BSPT barbs before I wrap up the intake manifold install. I've pretty much replaced every since hose in that area.

Thanks for telling me the day after I put mine in.

I do have one question. With the oil cooler setup, the oil lines and the GReddy oil pan, would I be safe with putting in 5 quarts of oil in the engine? I normally put in 4 quarts in an oil change even with the oil pan. No issues. I'm going to do 4.5 quarts for sure, but I'd like to go up to 5 if it's safe.

How much oil do you guys put in?

When I added a cooler, 8-10 feet of lines, remote filter, and greddy oil pan my TOTAL oil amount was around 8 quarts.... but when changing the oil it was only just under 5 quarts (just the oil in the pan)

How did you put in the original 8 quarts of oil? As in you poured 5 quarts and then started the motor, and then poured in 3 more quarts?
