  • Steering Hesitation

A buddy of mine put on new struts and springs on his s13. The struts are Tokico and springs I am not to sure right now. But my problem is that he has steering hesitation. When he turns the wheel to the right it is normal, but when he turns to the left the wheel gets resistance and then it pops back to normal. Just needing to know if anyone has had the same problem, or what it might be?

    Thanks,
    Brandon

No, I don't believe so. How could the alignment have anything to do with the hesitation?

I made an assumption that the hesitation happened while driving and was thinking it to be a really messed up alignment. I've had similiar things happen on past vehicles (all FWD nissans though) and it was typically related to really bad toe out/in on one side.

I guess this is happening while sitting still and turning the wheel left/right then?

Have the steering rack bushings been replaced?

OEM bushings are soft and crap especially after being soaked in oil for tens of thousands of miles.

Everyone needs to replace their steering rack bushings with NISMO or poly ones 1st thing. It's easy and doesn't take much time.

Also make sure the steering coupler is tight, the u joint that goes between the steering rack and the steering shaft. I forgot to tighten mine after I installed my hicas rack and it felt funny, kind of like what you are describing.

i installed aluminum steering rack bushings quite a nice upgrade. RHDJapan was selling them.

I believe it's just happening when driving. He has jacked the front of the car up and turned the wheel to the right and left and nothing would happen. But I will try to get him to get the car aligned to see if that fixes anything.

Thanks to everyone and there replyes I will try them all out until we find the answer.

                Thanks,

Rack isn't centered, get the car aligned.
