  • Startup oil pressure on sr20

Just installed a set of gauges and was surprised to see my oil pressure start at 80psi and slowly drop to about 40 psi after probably 15 mins of idling while I checked stuff over.

The water temp seemed to be to normal (based on the stock gauge) around 160 (on the new gauge) and I believe I have 10-40 in there.

It's a red top sr and I don't imagine anything was done to the oil pump (eg shimming) and I was wondering if this is excessively high, a little high, normal, or ?? for these sr's

I expected ~40 startup and dropping to ~20.

I haven't driven it since so that's the only data I have right now

with 10-40 oil, that doesn't surprise me. numbers with 5-30 would be closer to 40/20..

with the shimmed pump on my old VG, I would see 60 at idle when cold and 100+ if I revved it-- and that's on 5-30 oil.. eek.

        That's normal, even with 5w-30.

Thanks guys. I was startled to see 80 and started checking sending unit grounding, etc and was happier with 40.

Definitely better than low oil pressure

If you get below 20 on a hot idle, I'd go to a higher oil weight and/or bump up the idle speed. On a stock tune with 5W-30 and no oil cooler I could come off track and have the oil light flicker on and off at idle with about 6-7 psi.

I bumped the idle up to around 900, and with the oil cooler it sits in the low 20's on a hot idle, about 30-40 if the oil is still cold at 900 RPM.
