  • KA24DE oil pressure lights

Just wondering about this since im new to the S14, i picked it up recently.

THis car has been beat to Sh**, 170k miles, stock engine, had a rev hard turbo kit on for the last 100 THOUSAND MILES. No joke. This thing hasnt even been tuned. ALthough it has a jim wolf ECU. Its mainly highway miles, but thsi car went to many drift events and got driven hard (clutch kick drift owner) on the road.

So wehn i start it up, i stare at the oil pressue light for alot longer than i think i should. My s13 KA24DE oil light would go out 1-2 seconds after start up, the S14s will stay on for ... 4-5 sec maybe.

In my experience this means WORN OUT ROD BEARINGS, but ther's no rod knock or anything (yet). It woudlnt surprise me at all due to the age/use this engines had, but the old owner who bought the car new in 98 says its always done that. He's a friend of mine, and he knows i expect the motor to need replacement soon, so he has no reason to lie about it.

Anyone else notice this with thier S14s?

Also, tried out MOTUL 300v racing oil 15w-50 and it helped. Its at its worst on first start of the day, or if its been sitting a few days. Later starts in teh day, the light goes off in a slightly long, but more normal amount of time. 2-3 sec maybe.

If i blip the throttle just after startup it goes off immediately, but i dont like idea of doing that if there's low oil pressure!

It's probably just what you think it is for the reasons you stated. If you want to double check, a new oil pressure switch is less than $10 at Advance Auto. If it's not smoking or knocking it's probably not the end of the world, yet. The turbo has an oil feed line to fill on startup so I wouldn't expect it to come to pressure as fast as a stock motor. Enjoy driving it while you (quickly) save money for the rebuild

You should hear my wife's BMW. She has an old 318ic with the M42 four cylinder. It's got 185k and the oil filter is mounted UPSIDE DOWN! And it came with 20w50 from the factory. I did an HPDE at Roebling Road a couple of years ago and saw a kid that drove one with 235k from Charlotte, NC to Savannah. He beat on it all day long on the track and drove it home in the evening!
    Don Johnson (really!)
    Just so you know.

Yeah BMW Motors are very strong. Some have head gasket issues, many have cooling system failures (mainly due to stupid plastic waterpump impellors or plastic radiators, thermostat housings, expansion tanks etc).

Good point about the turbo lines, i didn't think of that. Thanks.

I've got 200K miles on my KA (95) and whenever I turn it one, it barely blink. Try hooking up an oil pressure gauge to it to see for sure. I hate that "OEM oil light of death".

I doubt it is the sensor.
My oil pressure started pulling that crap just before the pressure regulator locked itself up shortly thereafter seizing my motor. To get at it you will have to pull the oil pan and lower cover.

Sorry, might be about time for a rebuild before more damage is done. If you go that route I would replace the entire oil pump assembly, gears, cover, and regulator.
