  • MAF failure question KA-T wont idle

SO i've been chasing issues with my 98 KA-T lately. Car hasnt driven since mothers day evening when i hit a HUGE water splash in a bad t-storm.

I went through teh water w/ throttle closed, but i know the air filter got wet (its in teh engine bay!) and i know the MAF got misted from the inside with water.

Over the months, i've been so busy, just getting to fix it now. I had the 2500rpm rev limit too, which i've been told is the MAF.

Well i opened up the electronics box on the MAF, found WATER. Cleaned with electronics cleaner and soft toothbrush, dried out, re-sealed the box top. Reset codes (couldnt read them though for some reason, my scanner wouldnt retreive them). Still same issue. Then i found the "eng cont" fuse blown. Replaced that, now the engine will rev, but still wont hold idle and throttle response is poor. It was misfiring too. I found 2 broken spark plug wires, cracked dist cap, and corodded rotor. replaced all that, and cleaned the plugs (electrode still looked good, once cleaned). So its not misfiring anymore, much better, but still wont hold idle.

I havent tried to actually drive it. I havent scanned it since replacing the fuse (im guessing that fust may have blocked me from retreiving codes).
But have had the bat disconnected for periods to clear codes.
I just cleaned all charge plumbing, and also re did some questionable wirign i found on the car/in the maf wiring too.

So, i know i need a service manual, scanner, and volt meter to really diagnose this any further, but just wondering, has anyone had a MAF fail and NOT had the 2500rpm rev limit, but the engine wouldn't idle?

Im going to search further in, but just wanted to hear other experiences.

Also, i have a jim wolf ECU, 370cc injectors, old rev hard turbo kit 6psi, 255 walbro fuel pump, SAFC (untuned), stock MAF set AFTER the intercooler before the throttle body. I bought the car this way.

Interestingly i threw a stock KA ecu in there just to see what'd happen. The engine would idle w/o me holding throttle, although not as smoothly as it should. If the jim wolf ECU was bad- would it even start? I think it wouldnt start if the ECU was blown. Water DID come INSIDE the car, b/c of a torn shifter boot! doh.. but i quickly layed down a whole bunch of napkins and soaked it up, i dont THINK the ECU wiring or ecu got wet, since its a little above the floor.

Any ideas will be appreciated. THANKS!

Wow have i found a mess with THIS car of mine... That'll teach me to buy a modded car, which i NEVER thought was a good idea in the past but all the good parts on this car tempted me too much=)

SO i found somebody had converted this car from OBDII to OBDI!! ouch every wire at the Ecu has been hacked up, spliced, POORLY ,not even soldered just twist and tape, yeah thats good wiring!!!! Every wire to the apex controller was loose, broken, or really badly soldered. Looks like 3 different people worked on this one job=p

So im redoing all the wiring, almost done. I hope this solves the problems, sure cant hurt!!

For anyone who'se going to solder, and new to it, let the soldering iron heat up the WIRES until the solder melts and soaks in b/w the strands, dont just melt the solder onto the wire, it doesnt work, and you'll be in my situation=(

If you need a new MAF let me know. I've got a z32 and an S14 MAF that I no longer need.

Great thanks. I do have a z32 also (never used it) but im not sure as to how to wire it up, and i'd have to change the plumbing a little. I've heard that the Z32 requres changing the apex'i controller settings. Do you know any details about this?

Right now the engine is low boost, high miles, so im not planning on trying to squeeze anything more out if it, i just hope it lasts a while as is=)

I should have all the re-wiring done soon and we'll see if I need a MAf then, thanks for the offer.

The MAF was the issue, but not the only issue. Once a new maf was installed, the car would idle, and rev, but wasn't quite as smooth as it should be.

Turns out- the apex controller (which i had no settings info at first=) was ALSO not set right.

The point is- a bad maf can let the car rev, but not idle. I had been told that a bad maf will be seen with a 2500rpm rev limit- not ALWAYS the case.

A maf sensor failure code in the ECU will always limit the rpms to 2500. A boogered maf that is still outputting reasonable voltages will not trip a code, though.

I think thats exactly what happened. The maf blew the eng cont fuse when it got wet, which had the 2500rpm limit. Then i took apart adn cleaned the MAF, it worked somewhat (engine coudl rev), but wouldnt read well enough to let the car idle adn run well. Hopefully nobody else will run into a huge water splash like i did!
