  • "Rattle Can" Sound Coming From Wheels

I am having this weird "rattle can" sound that I believe is coming from my wheels. I hear it when the car is slowly rolling or coming to a stop. Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

I was thinking it may be coming from my hubs, but wanted to get your opinions.

I'll see if I can get a vid of the car making the noise. It is a ugly "clack" "clack" type of sound.

you hear your rear axle cotter pins? sounds like you are using undersized cotter pins. If not then maybe there is another issue, cotter pins shouldn't be able to actually make noise if they rattle at all.

i say jack the car up, wiggle everything you can get a pair of pliers or your hand on. Spin the wheel and listen carefully. Have someone apply the braes and see i if you can wiggle the wheel at all. If you are hearing a noise from something over the engine, stock or not, its something that will be very loud with the engine off.

I had a chance to tidy up some wiring on the car earlier today, so I took a look at the wheels. I am about 90% sure it is the hubs. Myself and a friend were rolling the car back and forth in the garage and you could hear the same "clacking" noise. I jacked the front wheels up in the air and spun the wheels and nothing. So it is only when the car is on the ground. I've had warped rotors before and don't think it's my rotors.

if its a clanking/clunking noise than its something most likely broken, if it was the bearings than it would sound aweful when you spin the wheel, or you would be able to wiggle the wheel in and out (grab top and bottom of wheel, and try to push/pull in opposite directions to test bearing)

Does the 240 have cotter pins in the front... maybe I'm thinking of my G20 then. I know one of my SR powered cars has a front cotter pin that has some movement and rattles at lower speeds.

All good advice. Also, it's not that hard to get the front hubs off and inspect the hub/bearings if this is the area you think it's coming from.
