  • 240SX Weight Reduction List

I have been working on compiling an accurate weight reduction part list for S chassis cars.

****Conflicting weights will not be changed until I get a 2nd verification from another member or a picture posted/PM'ed of the part weighed w/legit scale****

All prices are including shipping except the Deka batteries, those are local prices without tax so price per pound may vary depending on location and sale prices.

The closer to the top of the list an item is, the lower the overall cost to weight reduced is (Best bang for the buck).

    Deka lightweight battery #1 (Deka ETX 14) $70: -29lbs.
    11 pounds, stock S13 battery weighs 40.

    $2.41 per pound reduced.

    Deka lightweight battery #2 (Deka ETX16L) $75: -24.5lbs.
    15.5 pounds, stock S13 battery weighs 40.

    $3.06 per pound reduced.

Braille B106 ultra light weight battery $150: -33.1lbs.
    6.9 pounds, stock S13 battery weighs 40.

    $4.53 per pound reduced.

    Braille light weight battery B14115 $160: -28.5lbs
    11.5 pounds, stock S13 battery weighs 40.

    $5.61 per pound reduced

    Fiberglass doors (GTP) $640: -104lbs.
13 pounds each without glass, stock S13 doors weigh ~65 each without glass.

    $6.25 per pound reduced.

    300ZX aluminum rear uprights $100 ($50 each, shipped): -4.8lbs.
Z32 uprights weigh 7 pounds each, S13 cast iron uprights weigh 11.8 pounds each.

    $10.41 per pound reduced

Seibon carbon fiber doors $1500: -112lbs
9 pounds each without glass, stock S13 doors weigh ~65 each without glass.

    $13.39 per pound reduced.

Diamond H4 replaceable bulb headlights (Glass housing) $26. -1.5lbs.
Stock S13 240SX Sylvania lights weigh 3.5 pounds for both units, Diamond housings without bulbs weigh 2 pounds for both units.

    $17.33 per pound reduced.

    Corbeau A4 $320: -15lbs.
A4 seat weighs 25, S14 seat with brackets weighs 40 pounds.

$21.33 per pound reduced, per seat.

Seibon carbon fiber hood $480: -21lbs.
OEM style Carbon fiber weighs 18, stock S13 hood is 39 pounds without hinges or insulation.

    $26.66 per pound reduced.

    Fidanza aluminum flywheel $295: -11lbs.
Fidanza flywheel weighs 11 pounds, stock KA24DE is 22.

    $26.81 per pound reduced.

    Corbeau A4 $320: -11lbs.
A4 seat weighs 25, S13 seat with brackets weighs 36 pounds.

$29.09 per pound reduced, per seat.

    Aluminum KA/SR MT driveshaft $403: -9lbs.
    11 pounds, stock is ~20.

    $44.77 per pound reduced

    Rota Slip Stream 16x7 5x114.3 $145 each: -2.5lbs.
    Rota's weigh 13.5 pounds each, 90-96 300ZX 16x7.5 wheels are 16 each.

$58 per pound reduced per wheel.

    Enkei RPF1 16x7 5x114.3 $208: -2.3lbs.
    Enkei's weigh 13.7 pounds, 90-96 300ZX 16x7.5 wheels are 16 each.

$90.43 per pound reduced per wheel.

    Volk TE37 16x7 5x114.3 $649 : -4.8lbs.
    Volk's weigh 11.2 pounds each, 90-96 300ZX 16x7.5 wheels are 16 each.
$135.20 per pound reduced per wheel.

In a sense, the Deka ETX14 battery is the best "bargain" method of losing quick weight on a car.

Wheels are one of the single most expensive items to reduce weight on an S13! They have a worse $/weight lost ratio than a carbon fiber hood or carbon fiber doors!

Also, I personally have Z32 NA wheels on my car so those are all that I compared the aftermarket wheels to so far. More to come after I find verified wheel weights.

You have the corneal seats twice. My ls13 build thread has some pictures of parts I have weighed when stripping my car. Mostly free stuff such as ac parts though.

Here's a list I've been keeping for myself

            240 specific weight reductions:
Listed below are some easily removable items:

            1. Passenger Seat (37lbs) - Removing the passenger seat is a very easy and effective way to give your 240SX a small gain in power. The nice thing is that the seat is only held in place by 4 bolts.

            2. Rear Seat (29lbs) - The rear seat is a little more complicated to remove than the passenger seat. When removing just remember where everything goes and it should be easy to put back in place whenever needed.

            3. Rear Seat Cushion (10lbs) - The rear cushion should be removed at the same time as the rear seat.

            4. Floor Mats/Front and Rear (6lbs) - This has to be the easiest weight reduction available for the 240SX owner.

            5. Tire Floor Cover (3lbs) - The tire floor cover is right underneath the rear hatch carpeting.

            6. Spare Tire and Jack (32lbs) - Another easily removable item.
            Total 117 lbs

            Weight Reduction-
            A/C 30
            Trunk lining 3
            Carpet padding and tar- 30
            Interior plastic and headliner 10
            Sunroof 24
            Steering wheel 6
            Pass Air bag 8
            Body Panels
            Hood 40
            Trunk 10
            Battery- 25
            Wheels 2lb x4 8
            Spare tire and jack 30

I have them listed once with S14 seats and once with S13 seats, I hope I didn't confuse anybody.

Do you have any pictures of the S13 cast iron units on a scale? I have a set of the Z32 units here myself that I can take to a known accurate scale if there are any questions about the weight difference. The only picture I found was showing the Z32 units the same as what I found, 7 pounds, and the S13 unit as 11.8 pounds.

Is this for an S13 hatch, coupe, or an S14? The only reason I ask is because your numbers are all quite a bit different than what my hatch parts weighed in at. If it's an S13/S14 coupe then that could be the difference.

I am curious to know this myself. This would simplify things somewhat if there was.

Thanks guys for the posts so far. I will update as I get more info sorted and verified.

Rear seat weighs 29 pounds? Definitely not on my S14. Whenever I have removed, I was flinging each piece around with one hand.

All my numbers are for an s14. At first I thought that 29 lbs was a bit high too. Especially since the bottom cushions weigh almost nothing, because they are nothing but two small metal tabs, polyester/nylon apulstery and foam, but I think that the 29 lbs includes the rear upper seat and some of the plastic bits that are found behind the seat. When something that big (the lower cushion or upper) weighs 15 lbs, it's size makes you think it weighs less. It was all from a reliable source.

Stock flywheel is 21lb, not 24-25lb.
                    Stock clutch+pressure plate: 13lb
A/C (compressor, bracket, lines, condenser, receiver-drier, evaporator): 38lb
                    Dead weight on firewall: 1lb
                    Dead weights on subframe: 1lb

                    Fuel: 103lb full on s14 (17.2gal), 96lb full on s13 (15.9gal), so even 1/2 tank is a major improvement
Windshield fluid: full reservoir is like 3/4gal which weighs 3lb
**EDIT: 3/4gal should weigh like 6lb, I messed up kg and lb

You wouldn't happen to have any pictures of the items being weighed would you?

Mainly because I have seen 10 different guys come up with 10 very different numbers for the same oem hood weight in the past. I weighed mine myself and got 39lbs on my scale, while I have seen from 25 to 60lbs listed online.

I am thinking that a picture of the same scale used with two different known weights on it and the reading should be enough to verify a genuine weight.

Something like a 5lb weight plate and a 25lb plate sound good to you guys, or am I asking too much?

I will update when I have proof of genuine weights. I want to keep this accurate for you guys.

I casually measured them with the same fishing scale, no pics.

The fluid weights are not measured. I just did weight = density x vol.

My OEM hood was 41 lbs with hinges. Cheap fiberglass hood is 19 lbs without hinges. Its a little heavier than most after I reinforced it, but its pretty stout.

FRP doors sound nice, and save a lot of wieght,, but I, personally, would be a little weary on giving up a lot of side impact protection unless you have a cage that comes up past the point where the side impact bars are.
