  • SR Oil Pickup

Lost my turbo at the race on Sat. Pulled one off another car and put it on the race car for the Sun. Started at 9 and finished by 12:30 but man was I beat the next day.

The interesting part is that I noticed my oil pressure would drop randomly on Sun. I finished the day, against my better judgment, and pulled the front pan. The screen part of the pickup had broken off at tube. This is the second time this has happened to this engine. I assumed the first time was due to a helper jacking up on the oil pan. The pan is fine and not touching anything now so why the heck did it break off this time?

I will not build an engine without the S14 pickup in it again. The brace goes to the part that broke off instead of to the tube.

The title should say that this is an SR but now you know.

Mike, I've never seen that failure before. I could see it happening the last time with assistance, but for it to happen again.

So, just the screen broke off or did the whole head of the pickup break off at the weld?

The whole head broke off, same as last time, right at the tube.

I have had this happen before. My s13 SR pickup came apart at the weld. No dents in oil pan at all on mine. I chalked it up to vibration. I re-brazed it back on with some authority. The stock weld isn't that impressive. Do you have solid or poly engine mounts?

Nismo mounts. Both of mine broke the metal at the tube. Nothing failed except the metal of the screen head.

I have to say it's a pretty tough engine to not lose it even with intermittent oil pressure, enough to burn up the turbo, twice.

It's a cool story on where this engine came from too. I found a very abused 240sx up a draw, in the middle of nowhere. The kid that had it, had bought it as a basket case but then gave up. I gave 200.00 with the SR in it but no valve cover, manifolds, ecu, wiring or compression. Took it home and put oil in the cylinders for a week. Compression came back a bit so I built it and have been racing it for 3 years now, even with no oil pressure.

I'd say the S14 pickup should fix the issue. from what I remember it was fairly cheap too, from the right location.

They don't have any. They have been on back order since Dec. The only one I have found so far is FR Sport but I refuse to pay 60 bucks for a 20 buck part. I welded mine up and added a brace for the time being.

That's what I've had done to s13 pickups, just have it tigged around the base, and call it a day.
