  • SR trans on a KA??

I'm thinking of snagging an SR trans for "mad-cheap" this weekend. I'm wondering if there's anything I need to look out for that would make this more complicated than I think it is.

What I hear is that you're set as long as you swap bell housings. If that's the case, awesome.

But I wonder about the sensors on the trans being the same type / plugs? 5th gear and speed sensors come to mind?

And if I keep the KA's bell housing, my KA's clutch and flywheel will work without issue?

Spline counts and output shaft lengths all good?

    yep, yep, yep

But keep the KA trans sensors around until you know which are good bad and leaking,

Ratios aren't identical, search around and you should find the different gear ratios in a spread sheet somewhere around here.

Different ratios is the whole reason for switching... A more lively 5th gear going down the longer straights is something I've been after for a while.

And this one I'm picking up **SHOULD** be one of the S14 SR20DET transmissions that had the 0.838 5th gear instead of the 0.759 5th on my stock KA trans. But that assume's that this link is correct.

I'll hunt around for a comparison listing of gear ratio's on this site to verify the other information I've found. I'm not meeting the guy for it till Saturday, plenty of time to do some verification research ahead of my purchase right?

Why not just steadl a 5th gear from a Hardbody? it's much cheaper than a whole SR tranny that you have to tear apart anyway..

This is cheaper than a single overdrive gear from a hard-body. And swapping the bell housing seems easier than stripping it down all the way and changing the 5th gear out?

yeah seriously, I wouldn't recommend anyone tear into a trans any further than necessary, really not a hand tool process there matt

Eh.. did it myself several times. Well, replaced bearings anyway..
Broke 1st gear in my Maxima and swapped it out too. fun part was the 1st gear teeth that broke were on the mainshaft, so I had to pull all the guts off the shaft and replace the whole damn thing. fun stuff!
