  • I lost 18lbs today....

    By building my own exhaust...

The old exhaust was a cut up and modified and repaired and repaired again HKS Super Drager.. The remaining parts of it weighed 34lbs.

In its place went an accordian type flex section, some 16ga (I was hoping for 18 ga, but that's all I could find on short notice) 2.5" pipe, and a Moroso Spiral Flow muffler. The whole thing from header flange to tip weighs 16lb.

It's got a real nice tone at idle, but that's as far as it goes. I drove it around the neighborhood, and OMFG it's loud!!! I'll have to see how it does when I get it to the track. I have a friend with an SPL meter which I can leave trackside and make a few runs by it. long as it's legal for SCCA, I don't care how loud it is. I drive with earplugs anyway.

So yeah.. that's my progress for the week. Stay tuned for some other garage mods that should have been cheap but wound up costing me more than an off-the-shelf aftermarket part... all to keep the damn things SCCA legal. grrr.

Having a loud exhaust is fun for the first lap.

Needless to say: I will never run straight pipe anymore.

I hope you like it :P

The solution to a loud exhaust.... put a turbo in there. Turbine give you big time muffle action, it love you long time!

I struggled with sound issues on my 240 for years. The thing that will get you, is that you will think you are fine because you past sound at one track, and then at the next, you'll be over. Atmospheric conditions, placement of the equipment and the location of the recording equipment on the track will change the reading.

If you haven't already done so, I also suggest you fabricate a turn down at the end of the pipe. That changed the db reading quite a bit on my car. If you don't want to add one, at least fab up one that you can easily attach, just in case.

Also everytime you go to a new track, check your posted readings early. Saves a chat with the steward or worse.

Yup.. It's a straight shot right now. it's angled down a few degrees- about 10- but I'm going to pick up/build a turndown for it. I would have bought some initially, but the smallest they sell at Summit is 3" and the last thing I want to do is put a megaphone on the end of it.

If it's still too loud, I can always pick up a resonator and stick it in next to the driveshaft.

Just get a piece of mandrel bent piping the same dia as your muffler then do a couple of cuts in the end so it'll slip over the end of your exhaust piping. Hose clamp and it should be fine. Or you could take it to a muffler shop and have them expand the end of it a bit so it slips right on really easily.

Like this . This was my sentra and it did have a turbo, but was still louder than I liked.

I have the opposite problem. Think I will be taking off the flowmasters to make it sound more like a racecar.

Look what I ran on my car tonight. I felt like being loud tonight. I rolled it out that way

Sounds like a C6R. Amazing... but will get some cats and mufflers
