  • s13 hicas steering rack into s14?

Its about time to fix some steering issues so figured i would just replace the entire rack with a rebuilt one. I am curious to know if a hicas rack would fit in and would the original lines bolt up? I am sure i would have to get s14 tierods.

I'm pretty sure they are interchangeable, as long as you get the top collar piece from the S13 as well when you get the HICAS rack, since I'm pretty sure the tear drop shape bracket is only on the S13s.

        Top collar piece?

It is a direct bolt in besides the one round bushing. The s13 rack is slightly thicker so it needs a slimmer bushing. The odd shaped bushings are the same.

I'm about to install a HICAS rack on my s14.... just use the s13 bushings and you'll be fine.

          Ahhhh.

          That's cool.

I never messed with S14 racks, so I don't know what exactly the difference was. I just know that it used to be the S13 could use the Energy Suspension steering rack bushing kit, and S14s had to get that Nismo one for the one odd shaped one or something.

Now the Energy Suspension kit comes with the extra bushing for the S14s as well, but I've never seen the new kit, so I don't know what's different haha

Good to hear then. I'll try and pick up a hicas rack and energy bushings.

I am currently running a hicas rack on my s14. It is a direct swap with the bushings. I really like the quicker steering but the change is not as substantial as I expected. It is worth doing though.

Yea the difference is in the bushings... if you ordr a polyurethane bushing kit for 240sx.. you'll get both s13 and s14 bushings (3)... reason I know is I am getting a guy from the UK to machine me a custom rack and it'll be available for s13, s14, s15, z32, r32, etc... as they are all differences in bushings...

Are the hicas racks a better ratio or something?

yeah, there's fewer turns lock to lock, so it provides quicker steering for those that want it.
with no power steering, I'd rather have the slower steering and more leverage. already had to go to a schoolbus-size steering wheel to be able to make it through a 4 hr track day without my shoulders falling off!

                      Solution - run powersteering. hah

I found I was slower without PS than with. I could get around track fine, but it's hard to really drive at the limit and aggressively balance the car with the amount of force it takes. There's more feedback just because you feel like you're fighting the front wheels the whole time.

For those that say it isn't hard, I didn't have a problem until I got on track. On the street no PS was fine 99% of the time. On track you're dealing with much larger steering forces.

I had fewer problems with steering effort on track than off.

I have stock tension rod length, no caster adjustment up top.

I'm not surprised, it only gets hard to steer when you go fast.
