Originally I thought I could just remove the hub and bearing assembly from the upright without removing the upright/rear lower ball joint/lca/half shaft. Now I'm trying to figure out how to remove the bearing assembly from the upright without having to do all the extra work if possible. Is there a way to do it with the rest of the suspension still on or does everything have to come off and a lower ball joint swap lies in my future?

you're talking about the rear, right? i remember it being a pain in the ass too. i think i unhooked some of the control arms on the first side, but i figured out a way to get wrenches on all of them after that. i never undid the ball joint. i can't describe it, but it can be done.

Easiest would be to disconnect the toe, and upper arm from the knuckle. Then remove axle. Worse comes to worst, disconnect the traction arm too. If you're going in as far as removing the hub, disconnecting these is just a little more effort in a lot of time savings.

No need to remove the axles or any arms to do a 5-lug swap in the rear. If you rotate the axles, you will see a indent in the axle housing (closest to the upright) that will allow you to get an extension/socket onto the bolt, this can be repeated for all 4 bolts holding the hub housing onto the upright and should take no longer than 20 minutes at the most to do per side. I've done it a few times now and the hardest part is just working around the arms to get enough leverage to break the bolts free and when your tightening them up.-Monty

Haha oh well I just pulled it all off anyways...I finally did get all the arms disconnected at the knuckle and slid it off the end of the axle and now I'll work with it off the car. McCoy I'll have to try to look for those next time when I do subframe and multilink stuff but I'm way past that point this time.'06 wrx - DD
