  • Swedish GT500 Project

The crazy Swedes are at it again.

This guy wants to spend entirely too much money on a S14 making a tubeframe Super GT 500 lookalike using a midmounted SR20DET with VE head.

Also in the plan are dual A arm bell crank suspension front and rear with Öhlins dampers.

The thing that sets it apart is how good his website is for the project. Should be interesting and educational to follow.

    Website: http://www.gt500.se/
    Blog: http://www.gt500.se/blog/

He is working on the body plugs currently.

Its awesome but looking at the exhaust setup i giggled. Why go around the engine when he coulda went straight to the front and had manifold face other way LOL...... engineering...

The exhaust is designed to place the turbo in a place other than the driver's lap. It should also reduce intake piping length, which I'm assuming will go forward to an intercooler.

Does anybody know where all these crazy builds are able to be used? I see them all the time but you never see them once the project is finished...I'm guessing they're just used for club racing in a NASA SU type of class.

Time attacks, show cars, and track day toys. most of them never see wheel to wheel racing.

I wish that this project was moving forward, but I see no recent updates on the site. The thought of this car makes me very happy.

Mostly I'd say because some of the "really unlimited" classes just become an open pocket book contest. Most of these builds like this are done by people who have some money, but would rather spend some time to make something unique and "cool" - whatever that means to them.

After being on track with about a dozen of $100k+ cars who were lapping painfully slow, it's pretty obvious some guys have a lot of money. All it takes is a little skill and it's really hard to run with them when you're lacking a bit on the money side.

                  That's part of the fun.

I can't tell you how much street cred I used to get in my 15 year old Maxima when I'm outrunning most of the field at a Viper Track Day.

That's around the point where most of us try to make up for a lack of money with hours upon hours of labor...

Just bill yourself a few hundred bucks an hour and you'll have a million-dollar-car in no time

That's definitely my approach, but $$$ does buy speed out there.

Seeing a GTR on Hoosiers driven somewhat "point and shoot" like and just run away(mostly on the straights) was a bit humbling. Not that is hasn't happened before, but that thing moved like it had 500+ whp easy.

If it makes you feel any better I bet the first time he has to replace brakes and those sticky hoosiers, it costs more than a reasonably built S13 track car

It probably didn't bother him much as he was talking about what a "bargain" a brand new GTR is for a track car, and how the $2.5-3k HKS transmission cooler is a "cheap track mod." haha

I didn't really want to get into the bargain argument with him, as his tires probably cost about as much as my engine.

Usually I'll nod my head and agree.. Just before I walk away I throw in a comment about how I run about 2 sec slower and am just glad to almost keep up with such a beast.. then they watch me walk over to my 15 year old beater I bought for $1400 on ebay.
